The Question We Hear Most

During a recent session, our team fielded one of the most common questions we get about the Poo Pit: will it float once it's installed in areas with high groundwater?

It's a fair question. Nobody wants to bury something below grade only to have it shift once the water table rises. The short answer is no, it won't float. Here's the design behind that answer.

Why It Stays Put

The Poo Pit has a 24-inch diameter body paired with a 12-inch diameter riser shaft. That difference in size creates a 6-inch band around the unit, which gives room for backfill material to sit directly over the body and lock it into place from the outside.

Installation depth plays a role too. The unit is built for shallow installations, with a minimum depth of 43 inches, and the goal during install is to bring backfill material all the way up to the start of the riser shaft. That backfill isn't just filler around the edges. It's part of what anchors the unit in the ground.

From there, weight finishes the job. Once a concrete riser ring is placed, followed by a cast iron frame and cover, the combined weight of those components plus the surrounding backfill keeps the unit from moving, even under surcharged conditions.

The Poo Pit's lightweight design isn't just a convenience for installation crews. It's a deliberate piece of engineering that makes the product easy to carry into a job site while still standing firm against groundwater pressure once it's in place.
