Arlington, Texas, is actively modernizing its infrastructure to meet the demands of a growing population and aging systems. The city's commitment to enhancing its wastewater capabilities is evident in ongoing projects and efforts to improve efficiency.
In line with these efforts, Arlington is exploring innovative solutions like the Poo Pit to address challenges in its sewer infrastructure. Traditional concrete manholes are susceptible to corrosion and require confined-space entry for maintenance, posing safety risks to workers. The Poo Pit, constructed from durable polyethylene, offers a 100-year lifespan and eliminates the need for confined-space entry, significantly enhancing safety during maintenance activities.
Installation is fast and efficient. Each Poo Pit can be installed in about 15 minutes, with minimal equipment, reducing labor costs and community disruption. Nearby Texas municipalities, including Pilot Point and Fort Worth, have reported dramatic installation cost savings, with Poo Pit units costing as little as one-tenth the price of traditional manholes.
As Paul Rosales, Field Operations Sector Manager for Central West and North Arlington, explains:
"The Poo Pit is an innovative option to traditional pre-cast manholes. It's fully sealed, leak-proof, lightweight, and has lower life cycle costs. It's very easy to install and cost-effective. With a couple of years of experience in the ground, we haven't had any issues and it's been maintenance-free. They are our future with manholes."
Arlington is well-positioned to modernize its sewer systems with innovative solutions like the Poo Pit. With faster installations, safer maintenance, and lower long-term costs, it’s a win for both the city and its residents.
