Orlando, Florida

Orlando’s sewer system faces unique challenges, giving way to heavy rainfall, aging pipes, and the constant risk of environmental contamination. The Poo Pit is emerging as a smart solution for municipalities looking to protect both infrastructure and the surrounding environment.

Running across the intersection of W. Hazel Street and Amherst Ave. is a 300’ section of VCP pipe. As one of Orlando’s oldest neighborhoods, the infrastructure needed a serious update and even replacement. In doing so, the city decided to partner the installation of a new 8-inch PVC main with two Poo Pits at either end. Midway through the updated run, the new 3-way Mini Pit was added (Orlando was the first city in the United States to install a Mini Pit), with the main line feeding into it from both ends to connect with existing sewer structures.

The success of the installation at that intersection was critical due to the route relying on the old lines connected to the city’s installation, and throughout the entire process from excavation to installation, even backfilling and paving, it was all completed in one day. A quick, but significant improvement for a neighborhood in dire need of upgrades underneath.

Poo Pit was an easy choice for Orlando for several reasons, starting with its durable, 100% polyethylene build, the Poo Pit has an expected 100-year lifespan, far exceeding traditional concrete manholes. But its advantages don’t stop at durability. The fully sealed chamber prevents wastewater leaks, reducing the risk of contamination to soil and groundwater, an especially critical feature in Orlando’s water-sensitive environment.

Installation is fast and efficient. Each Poo Pit unit goes in in about 15 minutes, requiring minimal equipment and disruption. Hazel Street and Amherst is one of many examples of how a few minutes of maintenance and installation can protect waterways for an extended span of time.

The growing adoption of Poo Pit technology across Florida highlights its benefits. Municipalities aren’t just seeing improved safety and environmental protection, but also significant reductions in installation time and costs compared to solutions that used to be considered traditional.

Orlando is embracing this next-generation wastewater system to safeguard both its infrastructure and its community. The Poo Pit represents a smarter, safer, and more sustainable approach to wastewater management, one that meets the city’s unique challenges head-on.
